    How to Compress JPEG

    1. 1

      Add your JPEG files

Drag your JPG or JPEG photos onto the tool or click Select Files. Add as many as you want. There is no limit on count or file size.

    2. 2

      Each photo compresses right away

Your browser compresses every photo the moment you add it. Nothing is uploaded, so compression is quick and fully private.

    3. 3

      Download your compressed JPEGs

Save each photo on its own or download them all as a ZIP. Use the quality slider, resize option, or WebP conversion in Settings if you need them even smaller.

    How JPEG compression works

JPEG is built for photographs. It uses lossy compression, which means it drops fine detail your eye barely registers so the file can shrink dramatically. A good JPEG compressor finds the point where the photo still looks sharp but the file is a fraction of its original size, and that is exactly what the quality slider controls.

Typical online tools upload your photos to a server before they compress JPEG files. CompressImage.io does the work inside your browser instead. Nothing is uploaded, there is no queue, and there is no cap on file size or how many photos you process.

Compress JPEG photos without visible quality loss

Most photos compress by 70 to 90 percent before any softening becomes noticeable. Start with the default quality, check the before and after preview, then nudge the slider down until the size suits you. For photos headed to the web, setting a maximum width also helps, since a 4000 pixel photo rarely needs to be that large on screen.

    JPEG, PNG, or WebP?

JPEG handles photos and detailed images with smooth color gradients better than any older format. It does not support transparency, so for logos and graphics with a see-through background reach for PNG instead. When the photo is going on a website, converting to WebP usually beats JPEG on size at the same quality while still working in every current browser.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will compressing a JPEG reduce its quality?

JPEG uses lossy compression, but the tool keeps the loss almost invisible while cutting file size by up to 90%. Raise the quality slider in Settings for a sharper result or lower it for a smaller file.

What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?

There is none. JPG and JPEG are the same format. The shorter .jpg extension comes from older systems that allowed only three letters. This tool reads both.

Is there a file size limit?

No. Compression runs on your own device rather than a server, so you can compress JPEGs of any size, and as many photos as you like, for free.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Every JPEG is processed inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device. That is also why the tool works offline.

How can I make a JPEG even smaller?

Lower the quality slider in Settings, set a maximum width or height to resize the image, or turn on Convert to WebP. WebP files usually run 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG at the same quality.
